Go over the boat and make sure everything is in proper working order.
Get all service work done that should be done.
Is the registration, and insurance up to date.
If required in your location is the Coast Guard inspection up to date.
Is the fire extinguisher good
PFD (life jackets) for each person that will be on board as well as a throw able flotation devise(is now required)
Has the Trailer been inspected (tire pressure, bearings, breaks, etc.)
Oil Tank full (if two stroke w/ oil injection)
Fresh fuel
Dock lines and bumpers if needed
Check your states boating laws to see if anything has changed.
Fishing license if you plan on fishing (good idea to have one even if not fishing but have fishing gear on board)
Make sure you put the drain plug in before leaving home, and inspect it before leaving home, if it is not the screw in type have an extra one on board.good idea with either type
Basic tool kit for taking care of things that can be done on the water.
Anchor? Good idea to have one if you are going to be on a river, and some states require it for boats over a certain length.
Other than that have fun and be safe!
Alcohol and water DO NOT MIX, and if you do and they catch you it goes on your drivers license, just like if you would have got caught on the road driving, maybe not in all states yet but a lot of them it works that way.

What minimum size boat should I buy and what marina can I live on a boat year long?

check over the hull for cracks or damage that could have occurred over the time it was out of the water. Also replace the drain plug at the rear of the boat. They dry rot when left out and will leak. Would be suprised how many boats sink or almost sink due to this plug leaking or seams that have opened up over the winter. If you are not familiar with boats a lot or are a first time boat owner get it inspected by your local boat repair shop. Better safe than sorry and having to swim back to shore. Recovery costs of sunken boat versus maybe $50 inspection fee makes a big difference in how much fun you have this summer..

Engine running well, plug is IN, Electric system inspected, battery charged and holding, all systems are checked, Anti-fouling bottom paint is applied, V.H.F Radio is checked, and a radio check is requested (channel 09, NOT ch 16 that's "Hailing and Distress" only). Fresh fuel, cell phone, sea tow card, all equipment is on board and double checked, before I even get in the boat, I put on my PFD, and keep it on, no matter what, AND I can swim like a fish <"))>< THE PFD IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IN BOATING ! JUST WEAR IT !
