One of the differences is they use a dye in the US. on
Diesel fuel to denote that the taxes are paid on it .Diesel
fuel is a lot more expensive than home heating oil,because
of the extra fuel taxes . Home heating oil does work in diesel
engines.

Heating oil is "Arctic" grade diesel. It is thinner and does not gel at low temperatures. It has lower lubricating qualities so should not be used in engines in warm weather but is OK in the winter (-30 temperatures).

Number 2 heating oil is almost the same as diesel fuel, the primary difference is that number 2 heating oil has a higher sulfur content. You can use number 2 heating oil in an emergency, but using it regularly will probably void your engine warranty. Don't be fooled by talk of dye, dye in diesel fuel signifies that it is for "off road" use like reefer fuel for refrigerated trailers, farm vehicles etc. Undyed diesel fuel is more expensive because it is low sulfur and meant for use in over the road vehicles. Red dyed diesel is not taxed it is for off road use.
