Section 571 of the Harbors and Navigation Code adresses this issue. In short, any person taking property from a vessel found either wrecked or abandoned is guilty of a misdemeanor crime. The Marine Services Unit has compiled a list of 39 abandoned vessels in the waterways of Contra Costa County. It is our intent to return the vessels and any property located within to the legal owners. Any "unclaimed" vessels valued at over $300.00 will be sold per the "boater lien law" provisions located within the Harbors and Navigation Code. All "unclaimed" vessels valued at less than $300.00 will be destroyed according to legal process. Please feel free to contact the Marine Services Unit at (925) 427-8507 with any questions.
