You will need 3 batteries. Lets say you were to put 3 batteries next to each other (side to side), say for instance that all batteries have a positive on the left side, from left to right, your positive on the first battery post would be your positive for your device, you would hook up the negative of the first battery to the positive on the second battery and then the negative from the second battery to the positive on the third battery, your remaining post (negative) would be the negative for your device, giving you 36 volts. Hope this makes sense.
