Question:
What makes the huge sound?
Answers:
We're looking for a new home. Any ideas?
On the port side of the QM2 stack is a "replica" Tyfon 575, but it's not a true replica as it is not built the same way--it's neither the Tyfon design nor a 575mm diaphragm horn as far as I can see. Neither Kockumsonics nor Cunard will give specifics, but from the sound I suspect it is a modern SuperTyfon design with a diaphragm size in the 150 to 230mm range. It is higher pitched than the real QM Tyfon, aroudn 72Hz IIRC.
The QM2 has a third horn towards the front of it, which is a Kockumsonics ElectroTyfon. This horn is an electromechanical device powered not by compressed air, but rather a 3-phase electric motor. The motor drives an oscillating piston which directly excites its fiberglass horn into resonating.
Does anyone know a good or bad boat surveyor in the Annapolis, Solomons, Deale, Maryland area?
On the original Queen Mary, all 3 Tyfons sounded the same note. On the QM2, its hodge-podge of horns all sound different pitches.
How about an old fashion Steam Whistle ?
It has one original from the QM1 - steam powered.
The new Queen Mary, shares not only the same name but also the same voice. The original Queen Mary had three ‘tyfon’ steam whistles to create a massive noise two octaves below middle C and audible ten miles away. Only one of the original whistles survived in anything like working condition and that one has been restored and installed aboard QM2. The other two whistles were copied from the original designs.
Power-pack how to check if not working?
Kockums of Sweden, the original manufacturer, built a duplicate and both were installed on the funnel of QM2.
Each tyfon horn is six feet, seven inches long and weighs approximately one ton. The enormous sound of these tyfons (the note A - 2 octaves below middle C) will be heard for ten miles.

I have have it, on good authority, that the ship is secretly equipped with a giant, inflatable Lauren Bacall. You usually can't see "her" because of the fog.
What's the smallest boat needed for 4 people on saltwater?
Apparently, Ms Bacall met the Chief Engineer (who's called Steve incidentally) some years ago, at the Captain's table. Over her luxury cod fish fingers [I'm afraid I can't divulge the brand here], she gave gave him a lot of useful advice on whistling.
