Question:
should i find another lower unit with the higher gears. i think 1.67 to 1. and the bigfoot series 2.3 to 1. dont need the low gears on a 14 ft bass boat but the price i got on the motor was a cant pass on. also is the lower unit housing and leg part larger and heavier than what would be on a non-bigfoot 60 horse. i would like to keep the weight down on the back of the boat if a lighter lower unit is an option. any input on the best way to do this would be great.would the lower unit off of a like year mercury 60 horse bolt on.

I just bought a boat and need to do some research on it...Help!?
The primary difference on the Bigfoot is the lower unit. It is designed to spin a bigger diameter / lower pitch prop to increase thrust. The problem is they cannot spin up fast enough to turn the higher pitch smaller diameter props for speed. The only way to make it more efficient on your small boat is to change the gearcase, thus allowing you a larger selection of props to make your boat perform more. Just going to a prop shop will not help, as they do not make props that perform properly on the lower geared lower. It would be like putting your car in first gear and holding the gas pedal on the floor, then putting taller tires on to go faster. Just won't work. Oh, by the way, I've been a dealer for 20 years, and we have a prop shop in houseAre carolina skiffs unsinkable type boats?
Prop Diameter X Prop Pitch. Bigger the number of either means faster only up to the point that the motor has enough power.More Questions & Answers ...
