We have a chance to buy an 1986 Mariner motor 9.9 hp. It's in really good shape & very clean, except the thing that hangs below the prop is broken.
The man wants to sell it for $1000.00

I would recommend buying the new motor. One of the main reasons why is the broken skeg, that is a sign of impact damage. If the prop was also hit there may be internal damage that may not show up for a while. This could get expensive if it goes. NADA on this motor is about $200.00 I don't have the value of a new motor but a 2006 9.9 4 stroke should go for about $2000.00. Look around you could do much better.How would i go about making a boat?
Not true. You wouldn't be able to get a new Mercury Mariner for close to $1000.00. But you haven't given enough information to answer this question properly. The car could be totally worth it, infact you could be getting a steal, but I could never know because you've only told me the year, make and model. Yea, right, Tell this guy to pull the needle out of his arm, $1000 for a 21 year old outboard motor ? DRUGS !!! I had an 87 48 Evinrude SPL, RUNNING in good condition (RE-BUILT a few years ago). I was buying another engine and the UPS guy that deliver's to my house asked to buy the 48 SPL, I said "It's almost 20 years old, I'm NOT putting my family in a boat with a 20 year old outboard on it, you can HAVE IT", I got the new motor, and the UPS guy took the other motor off my boat and left me a check for $200, You can do better than $1000 for a used 9.9 thats over 20 years old ?, this guy's trying to "Sucker" you for drug money ! I would'nt give him $3 for it !Can you build your own boat and legally drive it?
i bought my 25 hp merc new for 2,500.00 sure it was ten years ago and still running strong by the way ! with the damage it has to it i wouldnt give him 50 bucks ! you can do much better for 1,000.00!Thats kinda high, I just bought a 1982 9 hp yamaha for $200. Look up the cost of a new 9.9 on the net, that will give you an idea.
