Question:
I can do the painting. The spider cracks are only in the gel coat. Can I clean them out ( with what ) and then fill with resin? Someone told me to "just use bond do". Don't think thats right.

What do i need to buy to have thruhull exhaust on a boat?
I wouldn't paint unless absolutely ness.have you tried buffing it out with compound, does wonders for fading and minor scratches[paint doesn't last very long].as for the spider cracks, sand them down to the fiberglass and repair with gel coat, you can buy gel coat at any marine supply store[west marine, boaters world etc]. www.fibreglass.com/techgel.htmfill cracks with red oxide glazing putty--you can get it at napa or pep boys. It is around $10 a tube and it goes a long way. we have repaired about 10 boats with the same tube and still have some left. you will also need a plastic spreader--you can get these same place as putty. then you sand with very fine sandpaper 320 or finer grit. remember, a little goes a long way. take your time and fill the cracks, sand, then get it painted. I have seen several of the boats that my husband has done this way and they look very nice
IS there any marine terms guide or webside?
If you paint fiberglass you have to make certain to remove all oils and waxes before you paint. If you don't get this stuff off, you will get what is know as "fish eye" in the paint. Your new paint will have round holes in the finish and look bad. The spider cracks will probably show through or come back if you don't carefully grind them out and fill with epoxy resin. If these are just in the gel coat you might be okay. Don't go too deep and cut into the web or cloth as the fiberglass will lose the strength needed to be safe. I worked on boats for years and saw really bad Gel Coat blistering which is another can of worms for fiberglass. There is a Marine Resin "Bondo" type product but don't use car Bondo.More Questions & Answers ...
