On an inboard drive, you have a stuffing box that traditionally contained flax packing rings in a compression nut (the packing gland). Newer Teflon type packing is also employed in this type of seal but the traditional stuffing box was made to be lubricated by water and thus would drip during operation. The new dripless systems are quite nice and virtually maintenance free.

Inboard/outboard drives employ a series of boots or bellows to seal the boat from water infiltration.

I like to charter a large sail boat to sail from Bermuda to the USA .Buget , 8,000..Anyone have any idea??

The only truly leak-proof boat I've ever seen is one that's kept in a building and never put in the water. There are lots of ways to minimize water in the bilge but it's nearly impossible to eliminate it totally.

I am making a small wooden boat and want to cover it with fibreglass shell?

The lower unit or area that contains the propeller from the boat to the water is surrounded by what is called a boot or boots. They are made of rubber and protect wiring and hydraulics and also keep the unwanted water from entering the boat. Good for you in attempting this project I hope it's an older wooden boat like a Chris-craft or something like that.

Is it ok to mix different type two cycle oils in reservior tank for outboard motors?

Hi there. Its nice to see someone taking on such a job! If you are installing a inboard engine then you will need to fabricate or install a stuffing box. A stuffing box is the area that the prop shaft runs through and seals the T-Hull area from water leaking in. What the other guy was telling you about is for Inboard/Outboard motors (i/o). I/O uses rubber rings that are called bellows, these are what help seal off the drive unit w/ the aid of a strong gasket. Just Goggle for Stuffing Box and you will get several links. I have included a couple to get you started. And remember NOTHING on a boat is leak proof, just leak resistant. Water will always find a way in eventually. So check that stuffing box on a regular basis.
The first link below is for building a DIY stuffing box. The second link is for the parts. And the other are for your research.
Have fun and good luck!
