The serpintine belt on my '02 merc inboard leaves rubber dust all over the engine compartment.?

Question:
This can't be good for the motor. I've changed the belt and filed down rough spots on the plastic idler pullys, did not help. Is this normal?

Give me a kenning for sailing?

I see alot of this when doing boat checks and deliveries and surveys and have to say it is normal. As long as the pulleys are aligned and smooth with the correct belt there is not much else to be done. You may have made it worse when filling the pulley. I have the same thing happen on a pair of Cummins diesels, and everything is aligned.

Are all of the belt pulleys in alignment? Something does not seem right...

What can I expect to pay for a sailboat charter in the Carribean?

interesting question. Mark t is probably right as anything. i see a lot of them that cause dust and a lot that don't. probably something not aligned. maybe one of the grooved pulleys. be sure you don't have it "over tensioned".
