I am from North Alabama and one of my life's goals is to learn to sail a larger sailboat. I would love to find a school that would teach me on a mid sized boat. Preferably around a 27' to 35' boat. I visit the beaches in the panhandle area of Florida and South Alabama all the time during the summer, and would love to find a school. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Have you taken your Basic Keelboat class? If not, you'll want to go to Lanier Sailing Academy on Lake Martin, about an hour and 15 minutes from Birmingham down 280. It's about $450-$500. Basically, you go down for one weekend, and then come back the following Saturday. It's taught by an older guy who knows his stuff and is pretty easy going.After that, Lanier has a two part cruising and bareboating course out of Pensacola. Once you pass these, you can rent a sailboat in the Caribbean. I'm about to sign up for that one. You can learn about both at www.laniersail.com.
Is it harmful to the motor to dry start a waverunner?
I might suggest that you take your courses during either the Spring or Fall when there is a lot more wind. During the summer there is not much wind on the Gulf, which makes it tough to sail.
