Want to buy a sail boat but need help.?

Question:
I did a sailing training course on a tall ship and thought it was great. I even got voted to be the captain for a twenty four hour command day. Since then, I have been wanting to by a sail boat that i can be sailed single handed and sea worthy. Basically, I want to be able to sail wherever I want, even if that means crossing an ocean. I am looking at a yacht between 20 and 25 feet, that i can more in the city and perhaps even live on. I have seen reports of people sailing across the atlantic in boats of similar size but am wondering how someone with limited experience like myself would go doing something like that. I go to uni so cant go away as crew with someone to pick up experience and i dont want to join a yacht club, so please dont suggest these two answers. What size vessel would I need? Are you allowed to just sail around and throw an anchor off the coast of an island and do whatever? Could I perhaps buy a boat, and gain experience first with day trips and getting longer etc.?

Why do some boats have tillers and others have wheels?

Good move on the sailing experience. If you are serious about sailing you might do well to get all the crewing experience and training you possibly can with very experienced captains on their boats. The more experience you get the better. Speaking for myself only. I like to show up at sailing races, make friends with experienced, careful and sober captains and crew with them, I get all the experience I can. Even though I already have my own boat, I still deliberately sail with more experienced captains and I learn much that way, as well as sail my own boat I have had for several years..

How many days does it take for a ship to cross the Atlantic from Gibraltar to Norfolk?

Sailing is a little like flying an airplane, you don't (at least not wisely) just get on a plane one one day and take off and fly cross country! Many small steps, and much training lead to a thorough understanding of your plane, how to operate it in a wide variety of conditions, deal with equipment failures, weather problems, operator failures, navigation issues and etc.

What boat to buy now for the summer? $4000-$12000?

Same in sailing, there is much training, much paractice, and etc. , then gradually you build confidance to move from a few hours of sailing at a time always in fairly mild lake conditions, to maybe a weekend out on a lake in varied conditions, very, very gradually you build...

How Should I Polishing Metal Window trim?

After a year of two of very frequent weekend protected waters sailing, proving your skills, building your understanding, maybe you take some additional costal sail training and if your boat is capable AND you are well skilled and equipped then maybe you get to the point whare you eventually try a short near costal or protected bay day sail, probably along side with a friend shadowing you on his boat.

I have a Mercury 9.8 motor serial #6041290. What is the year model?

After much, much practice at that sort of thing maybe you eventually get to the point where you can maybe one day take a trip of 50 or a hundred miles from one near costal harbor to another one but ONLY after a very carefully planned trip and ONLY embarked upon under a excellent weather window, and etc.

I'm looking for a WW2 Polish Merchant ship SS Tobruk British Registered?

My point is this: sailing is done in incremental steps, much learning under skilled captain's training, much paractice under mild conditions & building on from that...

can you jump in to the sea from 100ft and survive?

Although a few folks have up and bought a small boat and set out inexperienced on an ocean sail and lived to tell it, many have most decidedly not...frankly, from my perspective its a very likely way to get "yer self" killed!

yahama motors?

Most 20 to 25 foot sailboats are NOT made to cross oceans, most 20 to 25 foot boats are for protected waters or at best near costal sailing. There are a very few exceptions...and they are expensive heavy boats (20 ft Flicka, Contessa 26).

Regarding that ship that's sinking in Devon?

These are full keel boats and not ones easily pulled behind cars or light trucks.

what is the material of construction for the ships?

There are however many, many 15 to 25 foot sailboats that are loads of fun to sail on lakes and in protected waters, or for a few of the more selected ones perhaps (maybe) eventually in protected near costal waters, but YOU have to be ready..
as well as your boat.

Looking for a ocean graph!?

For me, a small very affordable used cruiser, that I have slowly learned to sail under controled conditions (protected waters) has been the ticket to a lot of fun. More than I can say.

when they say knot ts in boating mph what is the diffrence beetween cars and boats?

The adventure factor of a weekend sail on a beautiful inland lake., river, protected waters is HUGE. Boring it is not, at least if there is any wind up.

How many people did it take to build the Emma Mærsk?

MY ticket to sailing has been to start with a small affordable cruiser, and sail frequently in protected conditions, a lot of fun.

So, I am very interested in learning how to sail/buying a boat....?

Happy sails, but also be wise & careful...

Crew on other people's boats - join a racing fleet as they're ALWAYS looking for good crew. Racing, especially offshore, is the best way to learn. You don't say what ocean you're on, but here in SF, they have Crewlist parties - you could get regular daysailing to build experience. As for a ocean-going yacht, you don't say how much you want to spend, but people have crossed the seas with very small boats, some with minimal sailing experience, but it isn't wise and some of them do not come back. Even tall ships sink - I tried to join the crew of the Marques in Antigua but no crew slots. During Halifax-Bermuda race, they were flying full sail when a 100knot wind came out of nowhere and drove them under in...45 seconds. Out of 28, 9 survived, including my pal, Smiling Jack. Sail as much as you can, take the USCG courses (cheap) or the US Sailing certs. Study boats, understand what the diff. is between full keel and fin keels, capsize ratios, sail plans, etc.. And yes, you can buy a boat, but wear your lifejacket. Always.

Is there a way to tell how many hours are on a '96 Mercury outboard?

Sanfrancisco answered darn good, I was going to emphasize USCGAUX courses. I know a fellow that sailed a 1978 SanJaun24 from Wash to Hawaii, he said he would NEVER do that again, he sold the SJ24 in Honolulu Harbor.
I owned and raced a SanJaun 24 for a while, good solid boat for weekends or races. I have a 22 Hunter for sale, if I was you, I would look for something like a 22-24 with a swing keel to get seasoned on. I have singlehanded larger, but after 29' it can be very taxing,
Learn what Tip and Capsize Ratios are, those are best learned on like a Laser 12-18. Fun boat. Good used ones can be found online for $500-$1000.
Go to the Marinas and put up a card on the boards there, name, # what you would like to do, and there are plenty of people that will take you out for a day, weekend or whatever. Experience is learned, it cannot be bought. The lessons from the USCGAUX are almost invaluable safty, RoR , How to Fuel, How to survive, What signal for what purpose, and so on. They have an online course, but a Certificate is much nicer and well deserved.
Look for something small that can be single handed easily. Singlehanded means that when it turtles, or flips, or gets knocked down, the skipper can right it singlehanded.
Solo means one person aboard one vessel. This has been done on vessels in excess of 48'and as small as 8'.
Go for it while you are able to, that is one thing that you never want to look back and say, I regret not having done that.
I am looking at a larger vessel now, I love sailing.I also know my limitations as well as my abilities and what us expected of me while aboard a vessel.

What is a good website for boating?

I have lived on a 23 foot, but there were issues. You dodneed to be able to stand up, Go with a 30. Too big and it is hard to singlehand. There are magazines that list where yachts are looing for crew for short voyages. ((Spinnaker, for the Chesapeake)Take a navigation course. Tall ships do handle differently than a sloop. There are places to moor and anchor but you need charts to tell where. Do some research as to what makes are considered blue water boats. You do not need to join a yacht club to crew on races.Do day trips but also take some other courses. There is a lot to learn about tides and currents and course plotting and anchoring and traffic and so on.

What was the length of a transatlantic crossing in the 1500's, 1600's, 1700's and the 1800's?

If you want to visit other copuntries it would be best if you got your boat documented with the Govt. the smallest they document is a 25' if it has a 5 net tons displacement. This is not regular displacement. I would suggest you get a boat in the 28'+ range as these are more comfortable and have some elbow room. The problem with a sailboat is that it sucks up money at a furious rate take dock fees they charge by the foot. Then the parts and pieces will kill your wallet just as fast. So the best thing for you to do now is buy a small daysailor like a Cal-20 or 25 these boats are trailerable and cheap to buy and very forgiving to newbies they are also very fast in a heavy wind. My Cal 20 stay out when a lot of others go in because my keel is about 50% of my boats weight which makes my boat very stable in high wind conditions but very cramped below.

How can I find the current position-location of a commercial ship (in the internet)?
