Each RED or Positive terminal and cable will run from the red terminal on each of the the batteries to a no 1position or number 2 position on the battery switch. All black (ground) wires will go from negative (ground terminals on the batteries, and the motor frame) to the negative terminal on the batteries and the negative side of assessories bus. The Boat motor red lead will connect to one of the switch positions, (one or Two) and your accessories bus will usually go on the other one. When you switch to "all", both batteries are put in Parallel which gives you 12 volts common but will combine available amerage. This is only true for dual 12 volt battery setups. This is very handy for setting up a trolling motor on one switch posit, the main engine on the other. That way you never run your trolling motor off the battery that you will need to start the engine. Just remember all black ground wires are always connected to each other, and the motor chassis, and maybe the boat too. depends are you trying fro 12 or 24 volts?never the negative. one positive from each battery to each battery terminal on the switch. the other terminal goes to the appliance/engine.

the switch should have a terminal marked common this one goes to starter. Battery 1 on switch goes to positive of battery you wish to be number one .The number two terminal goes to positive of second battery. The negative posts on the battery should go directly to the engine block . You can hook one up to ground which you probably already have so just make up jumper from one battery negative to the other negative postconnect all negatives together and also to frame of engine. connect positive wire for boat to center terminal on switch, connect one battery positive on each of the remaining positive terminals on the switch

You would hook both negative terminals to the same buss or common tie-point and switch the positive terminals of each battery. Your three-terminal switch will have a "common" terminal (usually in the middle) and a switched terminal at each end. The middle or common terminal will feed your systems and each of the "switched" terminals will connect to one of the batteries.
You have two choices here because only the battery that is switched into the circuit will be charged by the motor's alternator; so to keep each battery charged would mean running the boat on one battery for awhile, then running it on the other battery for awhile - but DO NOT switch batteries while the motor is running or the alternator can create a major spike that could damage the boat's electrical equipment.

The second choice is to check out any RV supply store and find a solid-state, dual-battery hookup module and install that instead of a switch. This little goodie will allow both batteries to be hooked together in parallel, both will be charged while the motor is running, but the module's series diodes will electrically isolate both batteries from each other. This prevents any disparity in individual battery voltage (or a dying battery) from sucking the life out of the battery with higher voltage.
