9.9 johnson long shaft starting problem?

i have a 9.9hp outboard that has been sitting a good while so i decided to start it up today,it starts will some carb cleaner but dies a few seconds later.so if you have any ideas it would be great

You can't let those engines sit around very long in the "dry" state! The carb will dry out and require rebuilding if you didn't add a stabilizer prior to shutting down for the season. I also spray WD-40 down the throat of mine just to keep it lubricated for the winter. I have a 6hp on my boat and it always starts on the second pull using the choke. Mine is a 1967 so I keep new points in it and last year I replaced the coils just to be sure I don't get in the middle of some lake and have it quit! So my suggestion would be a carb rebuild kit and a chemical dipping to clean out any sludge in the carb.

u need a needle seat and float for your carberator these carb kits are usaully pretty inexpensive 25 to 30 bucks and farily easy to do yourself. make sure you dump out all of your old fuel you dont want anything old going thru the newly tuned carb! good luck and happy boating!
