I've got a 1987 Mercury 135 outboard (B117465) that is running rough and smoking, any ideas?

you'll be just fine with any size motor on a 17' boat as long as you don't run it wide open. this could load it up and could cause damage.

how do you splice multiplat rope?

Nothing "happens" you just go a lot slower, maybe not able to get the boat to plane out, but if you just want to fish and tool around go ahead!! Me I prefer 60 or 70 mph!!

what is ballast?

I would keep the 140 hp. just because you have 140 ponies doesn't mean you have to use them all at once. that is why you have a throttle. just be glad you have that much power when you want it.

What Is The Shelf Life Of A Gel Battery?

Some of those older, larger motors eat up a lot of gas, so if speed isn't a concern for you, then you might just save some money on gas. For me, the bigger the better, haha.
