Question:
The switch on the motor was replaced last fall, but didn't get a chance to use it till now. Could the gage be bad. It always registers as the motor trimmed all the way up or down. Could there be a bad connection on the wiring? Thanks for any input.

Who did make a first boat in the world?
Also, you can check if gauge is good by briefly connecting 'I' and 'S' terminals on the back of the gauge. If arrow pegs out, the gauge is most likely fine.
What are the specifications for an emergency towing system?
Then the last thing left is the sender on the motor. It could be a wrong type or it was not adjusted well after the installation.
Greasing bearings on boat trailer?
You can check if the sender is not defective by tracing the wires from it to the first connectors (usually under the cowling of the motor). Disconnect them and use Ohmmeter to measure resistance on the sender. When you have your ohmmeter connected, move the little lever on the sender from all the way up to all the way down.
The ohmmeter should show variable resistance.
What is longest time period you would leave a boat motor idle before winterizing it?
But before doing all this, just make sure that it is adjusted properly, or if there are any signs of it being broken (again).
Normally its not the wiring, either its the gauge or the switch on the engine. Since you had the switch replaced last fall maybe the gauge is bad.
