Why limit your choice to those two ? They are both adequate manufacturers as they go, but there are much better boats, especially if, as you say, you expect to be single-handing. Which, by the way, is not a highly recommended way to sail. If only for the simple expedient of what do you do if you get sick or injured ?Anyway, your choice.

My choice for the best value for money, sailing characteristics, performance, and general design and equipment would be one of the French designs, Beneteau or their ex-rival Janneau, Feeling ( (Kirie ). Assuming that you are looking to buy used, and don't want to break the piggy bank open, then a 10 to 15 year old of this type should suit you just fine.
I have had more boats than I care to remember, of all sorts and sizes. The Feeling 35 is one of the smallest, yet in a class of it's own. A child can handle it, it responds like a dinghy, yet offers all of the comforts of a 40 + footer. My favourite cruising boat of all......so far.
Also Florida brokers tend to undervalue them , so they can often be picked at very reasonable prices.

My first larger sail boat was a1985 Hunter 23. I added a furling rig to the jib. It was easy to handle solo. Its more the equipment than the MFG. I did like the wing kneel on the Hunter, very stable. I don't know if its on the newer boats.Who makes better boats- Regal or Meridian?
Where are you planning to cruise? There are better blue water boats. I would choose the Hunter. We have sailed both. We have chartered a Catalina 30 and had problems. with the boat. We sail a Hunter 30 for . an older couple and have found that boat quite seaworthy. A roller furler jib is a necessity. Aft led lines to the cockpit are needed. Control of the main from the helm is a good idea. That is one thing the Hunter did not have. Good luck.Who owns the boat Kismet registered in Georgetown?
I would look around at some other boats because there are some heaps better yachts than catalinas and hunters. I would look at either a Beneteau Oceanis series because they are desigened for crusing, a Jeneau or a Dufour because they are great crusing yachts that also peform well if you want to race them. I learned to sail on a Beneteau Oceanis 473 and it is a beautiful crusing yacht. Because it is going to be your first yacht i would not recomend going to a 47 footer, look at the beneteau 343 or something around the 30 - 35 foot range, although the 47 foot beneteau is still easy to sail. All of that range of beneteaus are great crusing yachts.Where is the identification number on the Reo pick-ups 650 and 450?
