I'm looking to buy a 40hp mercury motor that is currently a tiller handle model. I'd prefer the steering column. Could anyone provide me with some advice as to how difficult this is, and how much it will cost me?

the cost is considerable. you'll need a remote start kit, a steering kit, a remote shift kit, throttle/shift control, and plenty of time if you're not a pro. i recently did one as a pro and it cost the customer over $1200. not trying to talk you out of it though.mercury thunderbolt 200. 20 HP. ser: 3542084. service manual?
Does your boat have have steering column at the moment & what type?? Cable? Hydraulic?...may just be a case of changing a plate on the front of the motor..Or replacing/fitting the whole thing....cost would vary from $0....to $ lots...Who owns the big blue/white boat in Sydney Harbour?
West Marine likely still has such a kit. Consists of steering wheel/cable drum, pulleys & motor attachments....$200 minimum. You mount the wheel on a dashbopard or on a console , both can be fabricated out of marine plywood. All not so difficult.http://www.westmarine.com..
