What is life like for someone working on a ship?

Question:
interested in a working ship, such as a oil tanker and the like

Answers:

Captains stools?

Life on a ship is standing watch, and handling cargo if you are in the deck department. If in the engine department, standing watch, and maintenance, fixing what the deckies break. If in the stewards department, cooking and cleaning. Watches are four hours on, eight hours off. anything beyond that is overtime. Ordinarys, and AB's are the laborers on deck. The chief mate is in charge of cargo and maintenance, the second mate is the navigator, and the third mate is in charge of safety, and the captain is in charge of it all, they are all licensed. In the engine room, there is a chief engineer, 1st assistant, 2nd assistant, and 3rd assistant, who are all licensed. Unlicensed engineroom personell are QMED's, Wipers, adn Oilers. If you are really serious about becoming a Merchant Marine, go to a maritime college, like Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Maine Maritime, SUNY Maritime, Texas A+M, Kings Point, or Cal. Maritime. You will graduate as a Licensed Officer with a degree, and all the paperwork and certifications for your license. Starting out with an OS and working your way up to the wheelhouse is getting harder every year and takes forever.

How much are private boat haulers getting per mile for hauling boats for business and/or private customers?

Well I guess it depends on whether you are in the engine room or on the bridge with the captain.

can anybody teach me how to convert grass cutter engine into bicyle motor?

Start small, find work as an ordinary seaman on a tug or crewboat. You will need time at sea and experience to get your Z-card for Able Body Seaman. Large US Flag freighters use union crews. Your will have to join a labor union to be considered for employment. There aren't that many jobs and the union halls are full. There is always Uncle Sam. Navy, Coast Guard, NOAA, and Corps of Engineers have plenty of afloat jobs. You can also join the crew of a sailing ship. There are a few sailing ships involved in education looking for crewmen. HMS Bounty, current being repaired in Maine, is looking for crewman. Amistad, in Mystic CT, is looking for crew. Search the net for other US sailing ships.
