Question:
I have a 2001 mercury 15 hp and when i start the motor after about 3 mins the oil filter gasket blows out. The motor was submerged in brakish water for about 8 hours. There is a new carb, starter. There is no visiable rust on the motor and many of the internals i have seen so far are clean. Is there any pressure relieve valves that may have clogged causing this. Otherwise the motor runs very well except this one problem. Also does anyone know where i can get an exploded diagram of the motor

If your talking about a 4 stroke, it's made by Yamaha. You could be putting the wrong oil filter on. If not, you've got a bad compression ring in one of the cylinders. Do a compression test. Something could be blocking the oil passage. Clogged crankcase ventilation. Put some Yamaha ring free in your gas and see if you can unstuck that ring. You'll have to buy a manual, if you want to see a cutaway view.
