Do propguards improve performace of outboards on sailboats?

While Optima's are good, they are expensive and don't hold much capacity. If just for starting, they are ok but still too pricy by a factor of 3 or 4!!.
I'd go with the deep cycle Trojans, either 12v or better , 2 6vdc golf cart batteries are much better suited to powering a boat's systems.
Good batts don't cost more than $1.25/lb. Any more than that and you are paying for ?

90% of the batteries that call themselves deep cycle are NOT! Just rebadged starting batteries which will die a lot faster.

Optima Blue Tops hands down. No water to mess with, lots of capacity, and they weigh less. I have 3 on my Triton, 2 for the trolling motor and one as a cranking battery. Yes they are expensive, but they last and vibration does NOT bother them.

I subscribe to "Powerboat Reports", (a kind of NO BS, no advertisement, "Consumers Reports") for the boating industry for over 17 years now... and they recently tested gel cell marine batteries and AGM (absorbed glass mat) marine batteries.
