What is the best product to use to restore the Gel cote on my boat?

Why are the lights on the front of a boat different colors and which side is which color?

whoever the guy is that said use 230 grit is crazy, you will be buffing scratches out forever. If its lightly oxidized just get you some 3M Super Duty rubbing compound..around $40 for a gallon...and a 3000 RPM buffer...not one of those cheap car polishers. Apply the compound on the hull and buff it off, helps to get the buffing pad a little wet with compound or water. If the pad is dry you can actually burn the gelcoat. If it needs more than that then you want to WET SAND the hull with a 600 grit wetsand paper and then buff the boat with the super duty. Worst case scenario you start with 400 wetsand, then 600, then buff. If you use anything rougher than 400 you will have scratches in the gelcoat and dull the finish. I assume that you are talking about the entire hull - and the gel coat is in generally unsightly shape.
I am the author of "FRP - Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics"
and considered the world's foremost FRP expert.
Gel coat is a colored thixotropic polyester resin approximately 30 mils thick. It has less abrasion resistance than paint in a spray can such as Krylon.
take 240 grit sand paper and VERY CAREFULLY, using the paper around around the flat of your hand, gently sand the general surface area and then solvent wash it with acetone.
Afterwards, use cheese cloth to rub the entire surface to be sure that it is smooth and clean.
Use Krylon paint spray cans of the color you want and spray the hull very carefully.
It will take time but if you do it carefully, the hull will look brand new and the 'barcol-hardness' of spray paint is better than gel coat. If you want a copy-paste of an excerpt from my FRP Manual that gives more detailed directions, email me at
