Mostly boy scouts only do that now.usually as part of the pioneering merit badge. Lashing is a way to build a shelter or a structure with out nails or other fasteners, all you need is an ax, a hatchet a knife and rope. If you know what you're doing you can build a wonderfully sturdy rough shelter, an observation tower, a monkey bridge to cross a stream/river or crevice/arroyo. The biggest advantage, is that when you take down whatever is was you built, you can keep the rope for use another day, and the timber can be reduced to firewood. In other words no trash debris left in the woods/mountains etc. Hope this will be helpful :)
