Mercury outboards?

Question:
how do i know how many strokes my outboard motor has? 2 stroke or 4 stroke

Answers:

How old does a boat and motor have to be before it is an antique?

do u add oil to the gas? If so its a 2 stroke...If it is a 2002 model or newer its more likely to be a 4 stroke since the laws changed...
If you are still uncertain call Mercury or check their website at Mercury.com and run your serial number...
If you need to run that motor before you can find out be sure to mix 2 cycle oil with gas 50:1 ratio...8oz of oil to 6 gallons of fuel...The engine may smoke like hell but atleast you wont ruin it! This is believing its a 4 stroke,if its a 2 stroke then the smoke will be moderate... Normal... If you had listed the serial number then I could have told you. Contact Mercury!!
