Does anyone know if I could paint over the old marine paint that's on it now with a good oil base paint? Do you think it would peel, or come off very easy if I put 3 or 4 coats on it?
I don't leave it in the water. I'm not looking for perfection, I've had the canoe for over 20 yrs and I'm looking for a quick and inexpensive fix. Marine paint cost to much for an old beat up canoe. Thanks for your answers in advance to everyone that answers.

I would say that you should properly strip the old paint and re-paint, using a marine style/epoxy paint. I have used, on a dingy that didn't sit in the water much, a product from Flecto (I think!) called 'Colors-in-plastic.' I got it from Home Depot. It will do for light usage. You still need to to properly prepare the surface.The proper marine paints, such as 'Awl-Grip' will do a fantastic job, but they are expensive, as you have already noticed.

If you use house paint and a broom to paint it, that is what it will look like when the paint chips off.Either get a good quality epoxy paint and do it right or leave it alone all together.

Perhaps some aqua lock from Sherwin Williams may do it. I really can't say for sure. However some of the warehouses we do have docks in the water and we use aqua lock for the poles. Give it a light sanding, then get that spray on paint that's designed for plastics and outdoor furniture. It won't be perfect, but it should stay on better than house paint. Besides, touch up will be a snap.More Questions & Answers ...
