I am looking for old Merchant Marine records. Can anyone tell me where to look? I am looking for my great-grandfather's MM records if they are available. He passed in 1917 at the ripe old age of 31. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a million!

If he was a U.S. Merchant Marine, you could try the closest U.S. Coast Guard Regional Exam Center to where he was living. They may have records, or tell you where you can find them.what size prop would be best for a 175 evinrude on a 20ft boat with a sixty gal fuel tank?
I'm a merchant marine officer and I know that all our records are now kept and handled by the USCG. Obviously the coast guard was around when you grandfather sailed, but I don't know who handled the records back then, or how long they're kept. The branches that handle all our records are called regional exam centers. There are branches all over including Boston, Baltimore, New Orleans, Houston, and the list goes on. If he was an officer, captain mate or engineer, he may have gone to one of the merchant marine academy's. If this is the case the one he attended would be a great place to start because they keep all their records for attendants for historic reasons.do you need a licence to drive a boat?
Hope this helps
