Question for link...how did you deduce the engine was a a'78 50hp? couldn't it have been a 9.8?

Question:
i'm a mercury dealer and would like to learn something.

Answers:

VHF radio equipment?

Keeping in mind that production runs are decided on demand, look at your records again. While the 9.8 in "78" has a something like a 4839254 S/N start, for the US, the 50 picks up around 4962056. S/N 4981722 say for instance would fall in that particular production run, therefore deducing the year and the hp. I hope this helps. I guess it's back to the early bird gets the cookie? Mercury is more concerned about keeping records of parts for a particular model than when it rolled of the assembly line.
