Where can I buy a 40+ hp outboard motor?

Question:
My husband is restoring a 1977 Invader and I would like to get him an outboard motor that doesn't cost a fortune. I have already checked the local newspaper (not many listings in the midwest) and BassPro Shops. The cheapest 40 hp outboard I have found so far is a Mercury 4 stroke for $7000. Any suggestions on where to find cheaper? It doesn't have to be new, just reliable. 2 stroke, 4 stroke, doesn't matter.

4 strokes are still more expensive than 2 strokes, try thr new "E-tec" series by Johnson (advanced two stroke). There are still other regular 2 strokes left. "Suzuki" makes a very strong outboard as well.
