I'm guessing you're talking about a 2 stroke diesel,How it works is basically
1>Intake/Compression stroke
The piston starts at it's lowest position, bettter known as Bottom dead centre(BDC)
From BDC the piston rises
A blower forces air through holes in the cylinder wall
the piston blocks the holes as it rises compressing the air
the piston reaches it's highest poition, better known as top dead centre (TDC)
2: Power/Exhaust stroke
At TDC the diesel injector, injects diesel fuel into the compressed air in the combustion chamber
the pressure ignites the diesel fuel forcing the piston downwards
the piston uncovers the intake holes and the exhaust valves open
the air coming from the intake holes forces the exhaust out of the exhaust valves
the piston reaches BDC and the exhaust valves close
The cycle begins again
