How can I convert my I/O boat from raw water cooling to a heat exchanger so I can use it in salt water?

It's a Marthon 27' cabin cruiser with a Chevy/OMC 350 stern drive. I would like to convert it and was wondering what the cheapest and best way to do this is. I want to take it in salt water for extended periods and I don't want to ruin the motor. I've been researching heat exchangers but it's kind of confusing. Any advise appreciated, thanks.

Well you could go to the OMC dealer and check into buying all the parts needed to convert it over. Or you could check online for a conversion kit. Maybe Barr or Osco would have them. But I have to tell you many of the I/Os I see are not fresh water or heat exchanger cooled. The system will last about ten years running in salt water before having to change out exhaust elbows or manifolds. And if you flush out the system with fresh water after each use (you can buy a kit if your engine doesn't have a hook-up or if you trailer it you can get a flush out to hook on the lower unit) it will last much longer. Think about this before rushing to spend for a heat exchanger system.

Mark t has it right. Down here in south Florida we have a lot of boats using direct salt water cooling and, they run a long time without any problems. Only thing I would add, is be sure to check your Zinc anodes at least every six months.
