Looking at a boat online. Seller gave me the HIN, and I ran a report on it. The report says a different year from the seller. Should I beware or could this legitimately happen? Anyone had any experience buying a boat online, any tips?

A direct answer to your question, how can HIN differ from the boat year, is there is a model year and the boat can be made in one year and still be the old model year . With a difference of 01 to 05, there is a problem. Is the manufacturer still in business? contact them. There may be a website where you can inquire.If it is off by say, one year it is not likely a big deal. If it is off by several then either the owner doesn't know what he has or is trying to pass it off, let me guess... as a newer boat. Boats depreciate like everything else so if he claims it is newer,hence more $$$$$$ !
If off by one year it may be the dealer told the owner it is, for example, a 1981 when it was really built in 1979 or 1980. I used to work at a boat manufacturer and we occasionally had some left over boats from one year to the next. Usually there were very minor changes from one model year to the next. Often just a change in the pinstripe or the type of tackle box installed in the unit. Usually the dealers would be honest and sell the units for the actual year but if they wanted to save a buck they would pass them off as current year models. Again, one or two years different but not several. Still not honest but it happens... TV's, cars, etc.

Just be sure the VIN matches the title, the verbal telling of the year is not a big deal, (often called a mistake) other than actual true cash / resale value.

I build boats for a living. If you can post the last four digits of the HIN I might be able to clarify your query. But for the sake of arguement. Let's say it was G206 and the dealer says it is a '06 boat. G = July and 2 indicates the boat was finished being built in 2002. If it said G806, then the boat was built and finished July 1998 but the boat is considered to be a 2006 model.

I am the Sales Manager for a yacht dealership and brokerage house. The odds of the HIN being a typo is slim to none. I've never seen it in all of my years in the industry. In fact, each HIN is verified prior to leaving the factory. More than likely, that "steal" of a deal may be just that.
