Mercury motor oil injection system question?

I have a pontoon boat equiped with a 40 horsepower mercury outboard motor with oil injection system. How reliable is this? Possible engine damage? Should i mix oil in with gas as a precaution?

They are very reliable. Remember this is a pressurized system so you want to keep the caps tight. You also should check the warning horns and make sure they are functioning. If you run the oil out and you do not hear a warning you will quickly ruin your motor.

These systems are very reliable and there is no need to mix oil and gas. If you do you will have to much oil mixed in the gas and will have heavy smoking and possibly foul the spark plugs. Yes there is a chance for engine damage should the system fail, but you will no about it when the alarm sounds.
