If so I would like to know whats it like and do you reccomend it. Any other info would be appreciated such as what is the minimum about of money needed to purchase a suitable boat (ball park figure - probably used) and what size boat at the minimum should I consider? I have lived aboard a Catalina 38 sailboat on San Francisco Bay for the past 6 years. 2 adults and 2 cats. it can be a little tight at times but is quite liberating. It is hard to let go of 'stuff' and minimize your possessions to what you actually need. I do miss my tools and the ability to go out to the garage and build something. But boat maintenance fills that void pretty well. You have to consider your toilet and laundry facilities. We have a pump out service that will come to the boat or we can motor over to the pump out station. Our marina has a laundry that can be crowded at times but we seem to work it out OK. Try not to clutter your living space and be a minimalist or you wont want to sail or cruise your house. Humidity WILL BE A PROBLEM!! Get a dehumidifier ASAP. We found a SOLEUS model that is reasonably sized and priced and has the option to drain into the bilge or sink or overboard as well as into its' own internal tank.As for finding a boat, start looking at the ads and bulletin boards around marinas. A comfortable live-aboard boat will be 30 ft or longer. (my opinion) I know people who live aboard 24 ft boats.

Be a minimalist. I`ve been living on the boat for 13 years and have found that the less you drag on board the better. It`s a nice contrast to the rat race on the shore. Make sure you have a flexible job so you don`t have to stay in that particular place(that place can turn out to be the rat race you are escaping)Make sure you find a boat you can handle alone. Buy the smallest boat you feel comfortable with and get to a place where the harbor master leave you alone.
