But, if your getting ansing, then make sure you check ALL fluids (mainly oil). Drain the old gas, put some new premium gas in it.
I need a good name for a marine biology research based ship or boat.?
Now, boat motors are watercooled... so unless you have an adaptor to hook up to the motor with water running through it, you'll burn your pistons. You can still start it without water, but don't run it long or hard... maybe a minute or two to be safe at idle.

If you don't know about boats, it would be a smart move to have it looked at. If it was "Fogged & Flushed" before it was put in storage, and all the fuel was drained out (Gasoline does NOT last long before going bad, even with "Fuel Stabilizer") it should be in excellent condition. I would NOT recommend starting the engine out of the water (UNLESS RABBIT EAR'S ARE USED), it only takes a few SECONDS to "Toast" the motor. What would happen to your car if you drained all of the water out of the radiator, and got on the road ? It would overheat, outboards have "Aluminum Heads" so just one "overheat", and you have a melted motor due to the "Heads" warping.Running this (or any water cooled marine engine) without water being delivered to the lower unit . . . even for a brief few seconds . . . can do damage to the rubber water pump impeller that resides inside the lower unit just above the cavitation plate (unless this boat of your has a sea water pump, in which case this rubber impeller would live inside a housing that's belt driven on the engine itself). Either way, I would certainly make sure you have water going to the lower unit before attempting to start it.
If this is your first boat and you're not all that comfortable servicing your own possessions, then I would suggest that you have an authorized service center give your newly acquired vessel the "once over". You may also want to ask if they could give you an in-house demonstration of the different controls and techniques needed to safely operate your boat. A quality service center shouldn't have a problem with this kind of request.
