How far past the water line, does the prop on my outboard motor need to be, to be effective?

Question:
for a sail boat 26'. The outboard is mounted on a kicker.

Answers:

what is the max people ever put on a ship throughout history.?

For an outboard motor to be effective (as well as to prevent overheating), the anti-cavitation plate MUST be at least 4" below the waterline in ALL sea conditions. Our vessel's outboard (Honda 15XL) prop in flat calm water is about 1 foot below the surface, which is enough to have water coming out the "check hole" at all times, even in 6 to 8 foot swells.

Electrical schematics/ diagrams?

BTW... saildrive is an INboard engine.

Do you know how I can get on the waiting list for residential moorings on the canal in Manchester.?

that's a good answer. the "anti-cavitation" plate is the large flat plate on the lower unit. it has to be well under water or the engine won't get cooling water. it you're in the ocean, you might go deeper due to swells that can throw the stern out of the water.

Where is and how do I change the oil on a 50 hp mercury engine?

for pushing a sailboat via a jackplate on the transom, you will need a long shaft or extra long shaft outboard engine.

How many feet are in a natical fathom?

regular short shaft will not work.

Does anyone know who ACTUALLY Invented the Fog-horn?and When?

You need a "Sail Drive" engine which has an extra long shaft. The cavitation plate should be below the waterline.

What 15 hp outboard motor is the best.?

the cavitation plate should be abut level with the bottom of the boat (not including the keel) this will give you the best performance from your engine as the prop will then be in 'clean water' i,e, not in waterr that is disturbed by the hull. causing cavitation, poor cooling performance and bad fuel efficiency.
as a general rule of thumb. to find the right shaft length measure from the top of your engine mounting plate, in y our case the kicker, measure fromt he top, to the bottom of the hull, excluding the keel.
if its between 15"-17" you need a short shaft.
any longer then you need a long shaft outboard. usually up to about 22inches
if its up past that then you may need an ultra long shaft, which are hard to come by, but are available.
since performance on a sail boat is not a key factor, thats just a general rule of thumb to give you an idea.
