Question:
Is there a mathmatical formula to calculate the proper weight for a boat anchor or anchor type??
Answers:
What does the "SS" mean in boat names like SS Mariner?
The type of anchor depends on the type of bottom you will be anchoring in. Each anchor is rated for a pull size. You need to know the weight of your boat. Use of chain is also helpful in getting proper hold.We have a 30 foot , 10,000 pound boat and use a 13 pound Fortress(Danforth type) with 30 feet of chain and it holds well in the mud of the Chesapeake.
A CQR or plow anchor holds better in weeds.A minimum of 10 feet of chain is recommended.
How would I attach a seat/bench to an old fiberglass hulled fishing boat?
Type of anchor varies with the nature of the bottom you will be over. I recall a formula of 1 pound per foot of length (go with overall length) for normal anchoring conditions but if there are high winds, currents or the risk of bad weather, you may want to increase the weight as well as add more rode. Also consider a second anchor in these situations.what i did when i bought mine was use the size and weight of the boat, and bought a heavier one than needed on some of the slips that come on them it tells how much weight it will hold in place ,most of the ones now are 15-20 pound weights anyway, and two of those will hold up to a 18 ft boat ,with no problem, but in windy conditions ,it may drift a little bit with you, mine does, and i got the biggest ones i could get, good luck,i hope this help,s.
How much water does a Denis Fire Engine hold?
no. there is no formula. you have to contact a human being that knows the area and tell them the size of your boat and weight, etc. a local dealer should be able to fix you up. the anchor is only part of the equation. you'll need 5-7 times the length of line or cable than the depth of the water.Hi,
The generally accepted "formula" is about 1lb per foot LOA (length over all) for an anchor.
BUT.....
It is not as simple as that.
Anchoring is not just about the anchor weight or type carried, in fact much of the work is done by the chain or the chain and rope attached to the anchor. On top of that, the strong point on the boat (samson post or cleat) must be secured well enough too.
Boat question...What is a transom?
There are other things a skipper should know and include to augment the anchoring rig; such as a swivel shackle attachment between anchor and chain, mousing all under water shackles, the correct scope (amount of chain to use) in different situations, the guage (thickness) of the chain links, a weight bag to slide down the chain when needed, a bridle to spread loads and anti-snatch methods.
I won't go into all those things here as it falls outside the scope of your question, but please feel free to email me if you are interested.
why do boat owners hate boats?
Anchor type will depend upon the sea bed in your chosen sailing area. You might decide to carry more than one and more than one type though. Many yachtsmen carry three or more anchors in order to cater for different conditions and different sea beds to be encountered.
A Danforth anchor will provide excellent holding in mud, is good as a kedge anchor and, if rigged with a tripping line, is easily recovered. It stows easily and doesn't take much room.
Anyone know anything about seasickness?
A CQR or Plough anchor provides great holding in all but rock and thick weed. It can be difficult to stow if not permanently rigged at the bow roller or on deck.
Looking for an Anchor that actually holds!?
A Bruce anchor is rated at somewhere between a Danforth and CQR in performance over the same types of sea bed. Is useless in rock and weed.
Why are ships launched by breaking champange on bow?
A Fishermans anchor is excellent in rock, shell and thick weeded sea beds, but will drag over sand.
To give you some idea; I have a 27' Long Keel GRP yacht. She weighs around 5 tonnes. I use 6mm guage chain and I carry 40 metres of it. On board are five anchors (six if you include the dinghy anchor) and they are two CQR's, one is 25lb and the other is 30lb, one 25 lb Bruce anchor, one 25lb Danforth and a 30lb Fishermans anchor.
Pros & Cons of an inboard vs. outboard engine?
This is not unusual amongst sailors who cruise internationally.
I hope this info helps you out, but I'm very happy to write more on the subject if you'd like me to. You can contact me through the CarQnA.com profile or else through my website at www.sailingunlimited.net
looking to buy my first jetski need advice from someone who knows please help?
If you let me know your vessel type and size and where you plan on sailing, I will offer some more specific suggestions.
Best regards,
Geoff
If you email me your type of boat, power or sail, the overall length and beam I can check this in my reference library and tell you exactly what you need. You should have 2 anchors onboard. A storm anchor which you would use if you were to anchor out for the night or a lunch hook anchor which is smaller and you would use it if you wanted to stop for lunch, swimming etc.
What is the name of a ship's lowest deck?
Bob has one boat and Jill has one anchor, Bob leaves his house driving a 2005 Toyota at 48 MPH and Jill runs in the opposite direction at 5 MPH at 3:00 pm Bob catches Jill. How does he catch her and how much did the anchor weigh?Boat has old gas in it, how do I dispose of it or do I run it until its gone?
Hi,You asked for a formula to calculate the weight of an anchor for a boat, right?
The formula is 1lb per foot of boat measured stem to stern.
There is no formula for anchor type I am afraid, my dear. The type would be determined by the area in which you intend to sail.
Basically, Geoff of sailingunlimited has got it completely right. (the second time tonight he has beaten me to a worthwhile question and answered it perfectly) I cannot fault nor add to his answer. He is spot on.
I do question one or two others you have received here, though.
"Storm anchor?" "you need two anchors on board?" What?
This guy's 30 years experience has not been on a yacht at sea, believe me. Or if it has, he has not sailed it very far. The absolute minimum a yacht should carry is three; one plough, one danforth and one fishermans. (a sea anchor/drogue/para-anchor should also be carried, but you didn't ask about them).
Trust me, anyone who tells you anything else is talking RUBBISH and listening to them may well get you into trouble out there.
