How do you remove excess fiberglass that was used on a boat for repairs?
You may have hit something and broken the shear pin or spun the prop hub. Both are designed as sacrificial devices to protect both the prop and the drive shaft and crankshaft from impact with submerged objects. If you are not familiar enough with the engine to check it out, take it to a qualified mechanic to find out what happened.it could be many things but it sounds serious so take it to a boat motor mechanic.
i think you might have snapped the leg shaft.

Inboard or outboard engine?Could be you hit something with the prop, and it broke the rubber bushing between the prop hub and the prop blades. Does it work at low speed and start spinning at higher speeds?
What is the best fuel filter for my Yamaha Saltwater Series 2 250hp outboard?
did you smell something like burnt rubber or something similar. typically this is caused by a bad coupler. its a small rubber bushing that sits between the engine and the drive and allows the drive shafts to slide somewhat. i've replaced these on my own, but it is a bit of work, some require pulling the outdrive, some require loosening the engine mount bolts and moving the engine a few inches to get to the coupler, replacing it and putting the engine back in place. regardless its a bit of a lengthy process to fix. It's very possible the sheer pin was snapped when an aquatic weed wound around the prop or the prop wacked an underwater rock or log. Check the prop for any serious dings or chips or scratches. You didn't say if the engine had stopped running or not, or if it was an inboard or outboard. Some more details could help everyone help you more efficiently in the future.
