Anyone know what a GUDE does on the lakes?

Question:
The closest I've been was as a wiper and OS on deep sea ships, but never even been on the lakes yet. Will I be on deck most of the time docking and standing gangway watches, or messing about in the engine room? Are steel toed shoes required at all times while working on American Steamship boats? How's the food? Do they have an exercise room? Heading out tomorrow evening.

Why do tug boats use very long tow lines?

Gude is a wiper. You be line handling. Scrubbing floors. Some have excersize rooms. Safety boots required. Food sucks.
You be cleaning in engine room too.
