Question:
Looking to buy new boat. I can trade the 15hp 4 stroke for a 25hp 2 stroke. I don't know what advantages there is to a 4 stroke. Not much on Mercury website but says a 2stroke may have better accelleration.

What is the value of a 1968 Starcraft speed boat with an inboard motor?
4-strokes are inherently more fuel efficient. but they are heavier and have more potential ways to break down. (you can't break a valve spring if you don't have valves)Depending on what you will do with the boat... one may be better.
1973 85hp johnson outboard, how to refill the lower unit and what kind of oil and how much oil?
Yes, 2-strokes can respond to the throttle faster. But for most purposes that really won't matter. The difference is small.
Where can I take the NJ opt-out boat license test? I want to take it now before the season starts.?
25 hp will make the boat go faster than 15 hp... but you will use a LOT more fuel. To double the speed of a boat it takes 8 times the power. You're considering moving up appx 40% in power.. thats only gong to gain you appx 5% to 10% speed and going from 4-stroke to 2- stroke with the larger displacement will appx tripple your fuel use to get that extra bit of speed.
What is a 1974 50hp Johnson evinrude outboard engine worth?
Yeah, and much nastier pollution. Get the 4 and give the fishies a break. Better yet, be a real man and get a kayak or canoe! How many bolts are there in a cruiser ship?
If you fish and it is close to where you put your boat in, I'd stick with the 4 stroke. If you have to travel a distance, the 25hp may be your better option. 2 stroke is loud and scares the fishies.I left my inboard outboard boat in the water all winter, what damages am I looking at ?
yes, you are right there will be better excel butt you have to mix oil with the gas a big pain!! and use fuel stabilizer to keep the carbs from gummy up, I have a 50 hp two stroker and it moves very quick..in a 16 ft v bottom lowe line.. 4stroke engine have more moving parts, two stroker don't there easy too maintain and much easy er to start... hope this help u to decide...Where to buy a ACRO PROP Local to Looe?
I recently sold my pontoon that had a 50 hp, 2 cycle Mercury outboard on it.Unless you get the modern 2 cycle, you either have to buy Go-Mix at the marina at $1.00 + over regular gas and this adds up fast. The 2 cycle will not get as good gas economy as the four cycle. I would use 10 gallons of Go-Mix to my son-in-laws 7 gallon of regular gasoline in his 4 cycle engine. We would take both boats out on the lake for fishing and picnics and run about the same distance so the comparison is fair. If you don't buy Go-Mix, then a gallon of good grade marine 2 cycle oil costs around $8 and when added to regular gasoline bumps the cost up about $0.60 per gallon.
Stick with the 4 cycle even though it doesn't accelerate quite as fast as the 2 cycle. You're not running a drag race so the time difference in going from 0 to top speed is a couple of seconds.
Better fuel economy, less pollution, less noise and longer engine life from a four cycle. The downside is it costs a little more to buy but if you boat a lot, you'll get the difference back fast.
Depending on the size and use of your "new" boat I'd say keep the 4 stroke. The 4 stroke is only slightly heavier but it runs quieter and uses much less gas. Also the power seems stronger than rated and it doesn't pollute as much as a 2 stroke.
