Question:
I graduate from College (diploma in Graphic Design) this year and want to start sailing with the aim of it becoming a serious hobby or (in a perfect world) a career. I am working towards owning my own boat, just to give me the motivation to do well and save my money.
Where can I buy a small model of a Flying Fifteen Boat for an xmas present?
What I want to know is, what qualifications are required to buy/ own/ sail a sailing boat of c.30 feet? I have heard RYA offer the right courses but which ones do I need, how much do they cost and how long do they take?
what does the sailing/boating term mean to kiss the maidens daughter?
I know I can look on the website but I want to hear the input of those of you who've actually dome the courses- thanks!
Where would one go about selling a boat battery charger(used)?
If I took a year out after college and worked 9-5 in a supermarket or office, and sailed at the weekends with my loca lclub of the RYA, would this be money/ time enough to earn the relevant qulaifications? Thanks!

Start with the RYA Day SkipperDoes anyone know the description of a German u-boat in WWI?
Try going down to your local club and finding out who the local RYA rep is and quiz them. Face to face chat will get you a much better idea as to exactly what you need to do.
You need to be a qualified skipper, or have at least 1 person with that qualification on your boat. There are several different skill levels...
A couple of questions about boats?
My partner is working towards this goal and has been for five yrs!! It wouldn't take you that long though!! He works offshore and has to work courses around his schedule!!you need to do a navigation course, day skipper course, international regulations for preventing collisions at sea, allsorts of other courses and finally yacht masters ticket!! I think!! The RYA will tell you exactly wot ya need to know.
I hope this has helped and good luck.
P.s He joined the local lifeboat crew and they booked and paid for all these courses.
We (me + partner) both did a Day Skipper class at night school last year (theory- you need to accompany this with a practical assesment "at sea" ) you can do both on an intensive course at an RYA school here or in Europe - usually in a mind bending week.
This is a good foundation - and is a good basis for an ICC international Cert of Competence that you will need if you want to charter a boat abroad. Yes there are many courses best of which is the Yachmaster (even better with the Ocean and Commercial Endorsements), but it is frowned upon - particularly by "old school" to crash through to this level on some of the more intensive schemes as many feel that the most valuable thing to have at sea is experience of varieties of situations and the knowedge as to the most practical thing to do to best handle events is perhaps best found by doing it rather than reading it out of a text book??
sclamatics for 115 hp mercruiser motor?
We race (RORC) regularly for this purpose - which puts an artifical stress into a situation but allows you a great oportunity to discuss the races ups and downs & decisions with some very experienced sailors and gets you time on the water.......

anyone knows the standard dimensions for the marine windows or portholes for an expedition ship?
If you are looking to get in to the luxury yacht industry try going down to Palma or Antibes and try walking the quays. Have copies of your CV ready . Make sure you have a photo on it as the yachts do get alot of CV and a face is alot easier to remember than a name. Also you could try going to all the crew agencies in Antibes. There are about ten or so. Some are better than others .
