Question:
this is an odd question but one I have wondered about ever since I went on a boat trip and was worried.
Had my 3 year old fallen off the boat, would he have sunk immediately to the bottom of the ocean or would I have had a chance to jump overboard and get him? I took a boat trip in Mexico and the security was not good and I was afraid the whole boat trip. The only thing seperating the passengers from the water was ropes so I had a hold of my son but worried and I have asked this question to people and they have not really known. He is in swim lessons now and I think that at that time he would have made an attempt to move his arms and legs.

Can alabama boaters take their boats on the bay in florida?
Even if your child inhaled water immediately, he would not sink like a rock. The human body is 50-65% water, making us somewhat buoyant. And you don't need much air in your lungs to be neutrally buoyant. You would certainly have a chance to save him, assuming you saw him fall in. The swim lessons are a great idea regardless. I used to be a swim instructor and have had children your age in my classes. Though they can't really learn to swim very well until they're about 5, it's still a good idea to get them comfortable in open water. After the instruction session ends, you should practice swimming exercises with him to help reinforce what he's learned. I'm a bit concerned that there wasn't a life jacket available on the boat, though...Pontoon Buoyancy: How much weight will each cubic foot of airspace in a pontoon hold above water?
Depends upon how scared the kid was; if he paniced and opened his mouth, he'd drown and sink like a rock. Since you're worried about him, next time you take a cruise, make sure he's got a safety vest or flotation device attached to him; that way, if, God forbid, he should go overboard (or fall into the swimming pool) at least he won't sink!I have a yamaha boat engine in my boat but I can't find a Impeller for it?
Well, towards my point of view, I would say that it really matters how afraid you child is of the water. If he couldn't really swim but felt okay with himself, he would make around, paddling, and be screeching for help. By the time you jumped in to save him, he would have been alright. It would have been not so good if your child panicing the whole time would go under, not totally sinking, but would need to be very fast to save him. I may not be totally right, but from my point of view, I think this will really help you. Good luck on your NEXT boating trip!!a well maintained 3yo would have enough body fat to float, especially in salt water. You probably could have saved him in clear, calm water.
HOWEVER I would have had a class III vest on the child in ANY conditions. It depends on the size of the vessel but in most US waters, children are required to wear a PFD when on the boat.
It's common sense on a vessel of any size: Put a PFD on the kid
My friend 12 foot Jon Boat 8.0HP motor won't stay cranked up, what do you think is going on?
They now make PFD's (Personal floatation devices) that look just like a fishing vest, or a wind breaker coat, you can't even tell that they are a "PFD", even upon close examination, the kid's can't even tell they are PFD's. Their is nothing wrong with your thinking, all boats are dangerous, and you should ALWAYS wear your PFD, I do, even on large boats, I just throw it on loose, bright colors are best, as they can be spotted quickly in the water, the Coast Guard always wears their "PFD's", that's good enough for me, they know how to avoid trouble on the water, so I'm doing as they suggest, "JUST WEAR IT" ! The ocean should be feared, it can take you in less than a second !What website can i view to find out how inboard marine motors work?
I have had our children & grandchildren around water often. Please use a life jacket, its better to be safe. How much is a 1990 Bayliner Hull worth without the engine?
David H
If the child was outfitted properly for a day on the water you would have no worries, because they would have a " LIFE JACKET ON" or other wise known as a PFD.
It is a USCG requirement that a PFD is available for every member on board, as well as one throw-able flotation device. USE the life jackets, don't sit on them or keep them stored, especially with children!
The good thing is, he would not sink to the bottom right away.
If he did not get hurt when falling overboard and is consious, he will stay afloat for a minute or until he gets tired.
On the other hand, if he is unconsious, he will not be able to keep his face up in the water. That's when you have to really rush to save him.
On board a boat what is`free surface`effect and how can it effect a vessels stability?
The best rule, in Mexico or anywhere in the world, child must wear a life jacket when on the boat. If there is no lifevest, do not go on the trip. The life of your child is more important than missed trip.
What does the P & O stand for in P&O ferries?
He wouldn't have sunk right to the bottom. Instinct would have made him kick his feet and move his arms so he would have stayed on top for a short time. However, once fear takes over and if he swallowed water, he would start to drown. You may have had only precious seconds to save him. Anyone on a boat of any kind, no matter what the local laws are, should wear a PFD, especially a child.Small children & boating ?? ALWAYS with a C.G. approved child PFD on...and at least one parent ( hopefully who swims ) also with a PFD on. Anything less is unsafe regardless of child's swimming ability. Better yet tether child's PFD to the adult.
