Question:
I've got the Murphy books down pretty well, taken advanced firefighting, bridge management, celestial,... but I'm not sure about stepping onto a ship for the first time as a mate. Are they really just untrustworthy peons like an OS in unlicensed, or do they need to know exactly what they're doing? Does the Mate give them checklists of what needs to be done when and how to do it, or should they already know all that somehow? I'm trying to go up the hawspipe, but think school might have been a better idea now.
Answers:
can any 1 tell me how 2 strip old paint off my outboard engine i tried a heat gun but dident work?
Murphy Books, BRM, Cel. Nav, any classes, and hands on training you may have received, does not negate the fact that a fresh Third Mate has NO experience. Most are cocky pains in the neck, that know it all. A Third Mates duties include standing at sea watch, safety (fire extinguishers, hoses, ppe, etc..), and helping with cargo. All I can say Is do your job, use big words like yes and no, or OK, ask questions, don't treat the engineers or unlicensed departments badly(they are usually great sources of info) admit when you don't know something, don't lie, and when in doubt CALL THE MASTER IMMEDIATELY.How did they join wood together 100`s of years ago so ships wouldn`t leak?
When you go on board ship as a green 3rd class you do what the 2nd lass says to do. You learn quick with on the job training.More Questions & Answers ...
