Passenger transportation and carraige via ocean/freight vessels?

I am trying to find if it possible to secure transportation as a passenger on an ocean-going cargo ship. I have not been able to find anything on the internet, but not sure if I am using the correct wording. Surely there are freight vessels out there who sell a passenger berth for carraige?

Due to recent changes in marine security policies this may be a tall order. To even get into a cargo terminal let alone a ship you must have extensive backround checks done through the government. Rules are changing all the time. I haven't heard of any shipping companies in these modern times getting involved with the hassle of taking unknown Lubbers to sea with them. If your looking for the experience alone, and you have the time and money, apply for an ordinary seamans document, get the additional basic safety training, and apply to a shipping company. Then you get a little adventure, and get paid.
