Can you take a freshwater boat into salt water?

Question:
I would like to buy a freshwater boat. I am curious to know if I can take it to the ocean once a year. Would it hurt the cooling system? Would putting it back in fresh water flush the system?

Can someone tell me what and where the intracoatal waterway is?

It will work fine, and you already know that it will need to be flushed immediately afterwards, by placing the prop in a tank or like you suggested, putting it in freshwater.

How do u glue foam 2geter??

Hose it down and flush the engine when your done. If it's an I/O or outboard motor just buy a pair of flushing muffs that attach to your garden hose. They do a great job. Saltwater is very corrosive but it won't do damage once a year. Just make sure all your zinc anodes are in good order.

Find out name of person whom a new boat motor is registered to by the serial number on motor.?

Make sure the Anodes in your cooling system are in good shape and you are good to go. The anode is a soft metal part that corrodes at a much higher rate than other metals in you cooling system. The action of the corrosion will create a very minute electrical charge that basically ionizes the water and protects the rest of the system. Flushing the system with fresh water will not fully cleanse the system. The best bet is to replace the anode yearly. A good boat shop can tell you where the anode is in your particular system.

will be ok to sail from Dover to Eastbourne in a yacht tomorrow?

why not if you boat can float in fresh water /it can in salt water too. But you should take spacial care if it is made if aluminum or not painted properly. as you will have to flush the cooling system and the boat thoroughly to get rid of the salt water under your boat and your motor blades and blow them dry to avoid calcification or erosion .Wishing you all the pleasure in oceanic boating

Rachel Ray or speed boat?

It shuld not be a problem. Hose down any parts that got salt water on them. If your cooling system is raw water, be sure to run it in fresh water as soon as possible.

We live on the Chesapeake and take a trailerable boat to Cayuga Lake every summer. Have transitted from Erie Canal ,Hudson River, down the Atlantic Coast and out to Nantuckett and back.

Does anyone know if there is a shuttle boat that will take you to?

yes you can. i live on the atlantic coast and there are motors more than 20 years old running here that have never seen anything but salt water. you don't even have to flush it if you don't want to and only go once a year or so.

What is the difference between home heating oil and diesel fuel..??

There is no such thing as a freshwater and a saltwater boat...they are good for any kind of water, but if you have a raw water cooling system then salt water will kill the motor from the inside out....but if it has an antifreeze colant system then is doesn't matter..but alsong as you don't leave the system filled with the saltwater too long you should be good, just as long as you run it thoughly in freashwater afterwards
