The first thing to understand is that basically, a diesel is a diesel regardless of using a 7hp diesel for a small genset, a Series 60 Detroit for an OTR truck, or a massive marine CAT engine. They all work basically the same. Now, when it comes to fuel additives, I avoid them under all but one condition. The only time I use fuel additives is when I will be running in temperatures below 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Under these conditions, and only as a precaution, I’ll add an anti-gel additive. Other than that, I just don’t have any reason to add anything.

When these products talk about keeping your fuel system clean and saving you fuel, they are talking about ideal conditions. I don’t know of anyone who operates a diesel under ideal conditions. They are meant to be used under harsh conditions. That’s why we put them in our boats (ok, that and the fact they use less fuel than gas engines.) If an owner is taking proper care of his/her equipment, they will not have a problem with sediments, rust, and other similar problems.

You will save more money by simply taking care of your equipment and using the fuel and oils it was designed for. Drain your fuel/water separator. Change your filters regularly. Change your oil regularly. If you want to use Biodiesel, that’s cool, but check your manufacturer’s recommendations first. Some of the engines do have seals that don’t react well to the stuff. Some manufacturers will even void your warranty if you use the wrong additives.

How does a on board battery charger work?

The manufacturers don’t want you to spend more money than you have to unless it is with them. For that reason, they will want you to be happy with THEIR product. If they thought additives would make their products work better (and remember, they are the ones with the huge R&D departments) they would recommend the products because it would make their engines look better, hence they would sell more engines.

When traveling by ship at 25 knots and you are 1 degree off course, how far will you be off course after 2 hr.

Please, just be very careful using any additives. They are generally designed for people looking for a shortcut to the normal maintenance schedules on their equipment.

Take care and good luck.

Is there any financing for boats with shaky credit if I put a big down payment?

I would say that 99% of similar products are no good. Great advances are being made in the field among them bio diesel and gasohol. Canada is expanding it's methanol production. In the US there is great expectations among the corn growers for the production of corn oil to be used for biodiesel. These fuels produce
less contamination and will help to lower their price and the dependance on fossil fuels. These will be better solutions to your economic problems but you will have to wait.

where can i get some information on norris wood planes?

No real answer to your exact problem, but on the line ofbiodiesel, we investigated its use in our 1978 S-2, Janmar 12 horse. It seems the soy diesel is more slippery and is not good for seals. Also it tends to clean out tanks and lines and you have to change filters several times after starting to use it. It is not recommended for old engines. It is very good however for newer engines. It smells like popcorn cooking when burned. It does save crude oil. Soy is grown in our area and there are new soy diesel plants being built.
