i am attempting in writing a book. time persiod 1700's.
in it there is a ship. 4 mast's, roughly 80 feet long, and not skinny,m but not as fat as a treasure gallion. do you know what kind of a ship that would classify as?
Answers:
1965 - 1975 Evinrude Model Number?
It is unlikely that an 80 foot boat would have 4 masts. If it did and was rigged fore and aft it would be a schooner, but it would not sail well. It could be a Chinese junk. It would be very unusual to have 4 masts. There is a 4 masted Chinese junk of that size, the masts are at incredibly different angles. Very few boats of the 1700s had 4 masts. 4 masted schooners were later. It is a matter of balance. As a matter of balance, they were 1, 2 or 3.In the 1700's there were a few, rare 4 masted Brigantines in use in the Carribean. There is only mention of them in some writings of the period but no drawings to the best of my knowledge. Normally brigantines were 2 masted and for the life of me I can't imagine what the additional two masts would have contributed other than to further divide the sail area.
80 ft is too short for four masts. Galleons existed long before 1700's. What part of world are you writing about? A ship sailing the North or Baltic Seas was built differently than a coastal schooner in the Caribbean.
What is the smallest size boat, that you can safely take on the atlantic? Either sailing or motor?
