Your right with today's new technologies its really hard to tell by just a quick glance even with the motor cowling off! you have so many different designs of fuel injectors, air injectors, air pumps its tough. But the down and dirty is All two strokes use some type of consumable two stroke oil. So if you have to continually add oil via a reservoir or gas/oil mixture it's a two stroke. four strokes have oil that needs to be changed every so often but unless your 4 stroke motor has some serious problem you don't need to keep adding oil. hope this helpsIM A 4 STROKE KINDA GUY

Four stroke has Valves eather over head or flat top, And for the most part two stroke will have a flat head with the spark plug in the middle. every single 4-stroke engine i can think of has "4-stroke" very prominently advertised on the engine. manufacturers definitely want to let you know it if it's a 4-stroke. if you look at the engine and the words "4-stroke" aren't emblazoned all over it, i think you can safely assume it's a 2-stroke.

besides the oil mixture of a 2 stroke and the oil being in the motor on a 4 stroke the main diff. is that a 2 stroke gives power each time the motor makes one revolution. each time the piston comes up and compresses the fuel air mixture it combusts giving power.a 4 stroke engine takes 2 revs. to complete the power stroke. remember a stroke is not a rev .2 stroke ..piston going down intaking fuel/air (one stroke) then up stroke compressing the air /fuel mixture and at the top of the "stroke" the plug fires and wa-la a Bass boat douni 80 mph.
just by looking at it .you can look for a dipstick, a 2 cycle will not have one , the other way is not easy to describe look for an extra box like thing on the stern part (generally) of the engine this is were the valves are located, only four strokes have them..the easy way is look for a sticker that tells you
