When working from true to compass, you add west and subtract east. Then working from your compass course to your true course, you subtract west and add east. But, you have to know your variation, deviation, and should know either your compass course or your true course depending on your situation. From there you can work it out with this formula.
Variation for your area can be found within the compass rose on a nautical chart. Deviation can be found on the compass card of your vessel or your compass can be calibrated and you'll have the compass error.

deviation is unique to the compass you are using, so what ever correction factor you apply is specific to your compass aqt the indicated course.
variation is unique to the area you are in, and will vary as you change locations.
I suppose its perfectly possible to develop some form of simple program that runs on say a progammable calculator or soemthign else. but you are then at the mercy of always having power to what ever device you are using.

Magnetic Deviation is caused by your vessel, you may not have to make any correction for that depending on the construction of your boat. (made of non-magnetic materials).

Take your compass reading, correct for deviation, which will give you magnetic course, then correct for variation, which will give you True course.

Applying variation is very simple.
Once you have a deviation card (or graph) made up for your boats steering compass, then the application of deviation is also very simple.
