There is no need for windows. While submerged a submarine's "ears" actually serve as it "eyes". They use sonar to listen for contacts. While at periscope depth, where the entire ship is just a few feet below the surface, we can just pop one or both periscopes up and look around all we want. That's not true, windows can be made to withstand the pressure. Look at the submerged research vessels, they're all window. Both DSRV's have windows. The reason US nuclear submarines don't have windows is because there isn't a need for them. Submarines don't need to "see" where they're going, they have charts to navigate by and SONAR to act as it's eyes and ears. The US Navy's nuclear submarine fleet is more interested in what's on the surface than what's on the bottom. Another reason our "boats" don't have windows is because they're not practicle. In the open ocean, you can't see very far so a window would be pretty much worthless in a submarine.
