I'm in the market and would like to know your opinion of each, ignoring that one is older than the other. Thanks in advance!

used cars sites?

The Pontiac G6 looks a little more stylish than the Chevrolet Impala. Ignoring looks, the Impala is the better vehicle. For one, it is larger, it consistently scores well in consumer opinion polls, i.e., Family Circle magazine top pick, Consumer's Digest, etc. I have an '04 Impala and have not had one single problem with the vehicle. My main reason for purchasing the Impala was that is received a 5 star frontal crash rating. Also important to me was the fact that at 6' 1" I have more than enough head and leg room. The Impala delivers great gas mileage, has a large trunk and I can carry 4 other people. The Impala is also a bargain. The base model is loaded and stickers around $23,000. One other note, the Impala is a low risk vehicle, making it less expensive to insure than a lot of other vehicles. My rate went down $280 a year and I have the same coverage. It's not flashy but it gets the job done and it does it well. I've test driven an '06 Impala and it has been improved upon and is a better vehicle than the '04. If I had to immediately purchase another vehicle, I'd order an '07 Impala.

the Pontiac by far

is buying a car from a auction better than buying it from a car dealer?

I think the Pontiac looks better.

whats a good second hand car to buy for around £30 - £35k only want one a year or two old?

In the latest Consumer Reports, the G6 tested so low, they could not even recommend it. The G6 tests this poorly in just about every comparison test I have read. Reliability is surprisingly OK, but resale and depreciation are horrible.

When is the best time of the year to buy a new or used car?

I quote Consumer Reports:
Highs: Controls
Lows: Noise, braking, sloppy handling at the limits, ride, fit and finish, access, turning circle, steering, rear seat, front seats on 4 cylinder

Chevy suburban or truck?

The Impala fairs better, but it was redesigned for 2006. The 2005 model year still has the old school motors and transmissions, but has so far proven to be very reliable. It was/is popular among the police and rental car companies. It is competent enough, but really was not all that competitive in it's market segment. Resale and depreciation have also not been very good.

What about a Nissan Xterra?

Avoid the G6 at all costs, GM should be embarrassed for putting out a car this lousy. You will be upside down on the loan, and will not get anything for it in a few years when you look to trade it. If it is solely these two cars, I would do the Impala, but that car is truthfully not that high on my list of gotta have cars. I would recommend a Honda or a Toyota, even if they are a few years older. Much more refined, and they hold their values much better.
